No Too Much Extra

If this is Olympic Baseball, I'm glad I'm not watching:

Oh, and by the way: The new Extra Innings Rule had to be used for the first time, and the Americans pretty much hate it. Terry Tiffee, the Dodgers Triple-A first baseman probably headed for The Show shortly, called it "bogus."

Miquel Castillo alerted me to the rule:

I was checking on the Olympics reports (not only beach volley...) and found out about a new extra innings rule in international baseball. Apparently, from the 11th on, every inning starts with men on 1st and 2nd and no outs.

If they're going to write silly rules like this, then it's best baseball isn't a part of these games.

Why is it a silly rule? I like it. That's how they do it in softball, and it's similar to college football OT.

Stupid rule. Why not just have a home run derby (aka shootout) to decide the winner then?

It has its purpose...a 20-inning game could wreak havoc on the tournament schedule and debilitate an otherwise good team. And as James says, many softball tournaments use something similar. But this is a bit much. Especially if, as I read elsewhere, you also get to pick where the batting order starts in the inning.

Would I want MLB to have a similar rule? Absolutely not. But I kinda like having different versions of baseball around. (I'm heterodox enough to like that the NL and AL differ on the DL.)

Let a thousand baseballs bloom!
