One Swing, Two Ties

Nomar Garciaparra homered in the bottom of the ninth to cap a Dodgers comeback as they defeat Philadelphia 7-6. Brad Penny pitched poorly, staking the Phillies to a 6-1 lead after two innings. Los Angeles fought back, however, as Manny Ramirez cut the lead in half with a two-run shot in the third inning, and Jeff Kent tied the game with a two out, two run double in the eighth. It was a good night for the veteran hitters.

Combined with the Diamondbacks 6-5 loss to Colorado and the Mets 12-0 win over Washington, the NL East and the NL West are both tied. With the Cubs and Brewers continuing to cruise toward playoff spots, this is where all the action lies in the National League.

re: phils losing 6-1 lead to dodgers as nomar hits walkoff homer, dodgers win 7-6

i really like this phillies team. i liked them last year. i like cole hamels, joe blanton, ryan howard, chase utley, the whole crew. jayson werth is even doing a great imitation of aaron rowand.

but the bullpen, which has been the strength of this team all year long, failed the last two nights as cole hamels left with a 3-1 lead after 7, and again last night the bullpen surrendered a 6-4 lead in the 8th, both in critical games the phillies needed to win to maintain their slim lead in the NL east.

now they've dropped three straight games, two of them clearly winnable, to the surging dodgers, because the bullpen has failed.

the mets and phillie are now absolutely tied for first, with 42 games to go.

may the best team win.
