Byrd in the Hand

The Red Sox picked up Paul Byrd off the waiver wire today:

The Boston Red Sox acquired pitcher Paul Byrd from Cleveland on Tuesday, hoping to boost a rotation hurt by an injury to Tim Wakefield and the struggles of Clay Buchholz.

The Red Sox will send either a player to be named or cash to the Indians.

The 37-year-old Byrd is 7-10 with a 4.53 ERA this season. But he has won all four of his starts since the All-Star break with a 1.24 ERA.

The only thing that's changed for Byrd since the all-star break is his home runs allowed. He gave up 23 before the break, 0 since. If this is a real adjustment instead of a lucky streak, he should be able to help the Red Sox.

About time they made a move. This should help and Byrd's got to be psyched to move from Cle.

Pitcher allowing 23 HR in half a season moves from Jacobs Field to Fenway? This doesn't sound like a good plan ...

If Byrd was available for a lower-level prospect or cash, I'm really surprised the Yankees didn't jump in. They need someone like Byrd -- or three someones like Byrd -- a lot more than the Red Sox do. For the Sox, he's back-of-rotation insurance; in Yankee Stadium, he'd be the #3 starter. Could this mean that Cashman is giving up on 2008? Or at least allowing the team to sink or swim on its own?

Taking Byrd for the league minimum plus a PTBNL is hardly moving aggressively to remain a contender this season. It's a no duh move that Cashman, who I usually respect a lot, inexplicably passed on.

He's won his last 4 since the break. He doesn't have to be that good to help. Charlie Zink won't be blocking his way.
