Rule Change

The Soxaholix won't like this post, but I'm watching Olympic volleyball, and I noticed a rule change. It used to be that you could only record a point if your team was serving. Now, there seems to be a point on every play. When did that rule change?

Several years ago...it's called "rally scoring." It helps somewhat in regulating the time of matches, but, like the DH, it is a change that has really altered strategy.

From wikipedia:

Before 1999, points could be scored only when a team had the serve (side-out scoring) and all sets went up to only 15 points. The FIVB changed the rules in 1999 (with the changes being compulsory in 2000) to use the current scoring system (formerly known as rally point system), primarily to make the length of the match more predictable and to make the game more spectator- and television-friendly.

Googled up a story that said the side-out rule was tossed in favor of rally scoring in 2001. That was for NCAA matches in this country. I don't know when the system went into effect for international matches.

It speeds up the game a lot.

Just read the story fom Google a little closer. It agrees with Wikipedia that the international rules were changed in 2000.

AM I imagining things, or does the team without the serve still not score on unforced errors? Just getting the serve?

1969.

It's the former, Gentry. There is a point on every play.
