Joba's Shoulder

Via Bronx Banter, the New York Times discusses Joba Chamberlain's injury:

Tendinitis is a vague term that can indicate a tear of some degree. Jorge Posada said in May that he had rotator-cuff tendinitis, but he actually had a tear in his subscapularis muscle. He eventually had labrum surgery.

Reminded of that, Mussina guessed that Posada aggravated his condition by throwing for so long before giving in to the pain. Girardi said tendinitis was nothing alarming.

"We're not going to rush anything, but that's pretty good diagnosis," he said. "Tendinitis is something that you could probably walk around and find it in 75 percent of the players."

Ian Kennedy pitched well at AAA. I'm sure the Yankees were looking forward to Ian improving the rotation, now they hope he can keep it from getting worse.

The difference with Posada's injury has to take arm strength into account. Posada was first shut down b/c he wasn't getting any power on his throws. He said the arm felt dead. Joba though was throwing 96.

I remember hearing a former player question Joba's long term health based on his mechanics. I believe it was Jim Palmer in the interview, but I'm not certain. I hope he bounces back. The game is more fun with true characters and competitors.

Jeebus, Rick Sutcliffe thinks Jobe will go back to the eighth inning role next season. Me thinks there needs to be a firericksutcliffe.com blog.

If NYY wants to use him as a starter next year they need to work on his mechanics to slow down his motion, stretch his stride and get him more over the the center of his weight. They need to get him in better shape is spring training and build up his arm strength before the season starts. When he pitches now he pitches like a short guy and overthrows everything.
