Losing the Locks

Via Extra Bases, Joe Torre did tell Manny Ramirez to cut his hair. Now T.J. Simers has a bet with Joe it won't happen:

If Ramirez returns to Dodger Stadium a week from today to open the team's next home stand with all his hair, Torre said he would make a donation to Mattel Children's Hospital at UCLA.

As part of the deal, Torre agrees he will say nothing more to Ramirez about his hair, believing Ramirez heard him the first time they talked.

If Ramirez shows up to Dodger Stadium without the dreads, Page 2 will make a donation to the Joe Torre Safe at Home Foundation.

As part of the deal, of course, I will say nothing more to Ramirez about his hair.

As Simers notes, there's not financial incentive, since the Red Sox, not the Dodgers are paying Manny. If Torre pushes this, he's likely to trigger the evil Manny the Red Sox were so anxious to trade.

I bet he cuts it.

Manny went from 1st to 3rd on a single yesterday - I guess his knee is feeling better. I wouldn't bet against him cutting his hair but I'll believe it when I see it.

I hate when teams make stupid rules like "cut your hair" to players who didn't choose to be on that team. Not fair, and shouldn't be enforcable. Now, if Manny was a free agent and signed with the Dodgers, then yeah... he should go by every silly rule the team has.... ALA Johnny Damon. But it just ain't right, when a guy has to follow non-baseball-performance-related rules when he didn't exactly choose to be on that team.

How come a player can dog it and fake a injury to break his contract. If we had a real baseball commissioner he would be under investigation now.

I believe Manny had them on his trade to list. He's not 16 yrs old. Maybe he'll stay in his room and pout.

Tom you are right. If he was hitting .220 & the sox cut him for being overweight on the 31st would that had been allowed?Of course not. They would have had to pay him & the union would have had a fit.Manny is a great hitter but this last episode was a disgrace to baseball fans everywhere.

What's this Manny shouldn't play by the non-performance-related rules because he didn't choose to come to LA? Manny did choose to come to the Dodgers.

I don't know the scope of his contractual no-trade rights. But that's beside the point. If his no-trade clause had a list of acceptable destinations, then he chose those destinations when he agreed to that contract.

The exact terms of his contractual no-trade rights are somewhat of a moot point though because Manny was a 10-5 guy. 10 yrs service, 5 yrs with Red Sox. As such, he acquired full no-trade rights under the collective bargaining agreement. In order to be traded to LA, he had to approve the deal.

Any way you slice it, Manny chose to play in LA.
