Sexson the City

The Yankees reach an agreement with Richie Sexson, not Barry Bonds. The Yankees plan on using Sexson exclusively against lefties. His line against southpaws this year is .344/.423/.623. I guess this doesn't rule out signing Bonds, the two could platoon at DH.

If I remember right, didn't Bobby Bonds play as a Yankee for a year or two?

I think it's good for Seattle to get rid of Sexon. That team really needs to rebuild. I didn't realize Sexon was hitting lefties so well this year.

Yes, Bobby banged out 32 homers for the Bombers in 1975, good memory.

The Mariners already dumped Sexson, they aren't getting rid of him with this move.
Sexson's platoon numbers this year look great, but they're kind of dubious since he doesn't have nearly such divergent splits for his career. Still, it's a very cheap move for the Yankees, essentially free.

Sexon's LHP/RHP BA splits for his career are within a few points of each other. I don't see the platoon numbers continuing. This will turn out to be a bad move. Although, what have they lost besides cash? It's worth a chance.

How many DHs can they play at once? Or, to put it the other way, how much will their defense deteriorate when they have two or three should-be-DHs in the field at a time?

I don't think it's a bad move, only because it doesn't cost the Yankees anything. It's more an irrelevant move.

It doesn't even cost them cash, really. What is it, $150k? Like, two A-Rod at bats?

How many DHs can they play at once:
They'll platoon Sexson, of course. And he'll be a much-needed righty bat off the bench.

It's an opportunity loss. Sexson will be about as useful as tits on a bull.

I'll be pretty shocked if Sexson's platoon splits this year aren't a sample size issue.

Sexson will mainly come off the bench as a pinch hitter, with the occassional start. Yes, it's a mostly irrelevant move, but with Matsui and Damon hurting it's worth a chance for New York... Sexson's bat can't be much worse than Wilson Betemit or rookie Justin Christian, the current primary bench hitters.

I hear they're also working on a trade for Jason Jennings because they need a new ace.
