Prince Maturing

Anthony Witrado details the trials and tribulations of Prince Fielder's season. I thought this was an amusing turn of a phrase:

"Things" like distractions swirled around Fielder to this point in the season. The first came when he announced he had become a vegetarian starting in February. He was hounded with interview requests all of spring training and through the first month of the season because of it.

Then came the contract beef.

Reminds me of this:

Aunt Voula: What do you mean he don't eat no meat?

[the entire room stops, in shock]

Aunt Voula: Oh, that's okay. I make lamb.

A similar story: One time, I was working in an office with a vegetarian and a volunteer offered to bring in a home cooked meal. I explained to her that some of our staffers were vegetarians, and she asked, "Do they eat chicken?" When I told her no, she responded with "Oh, so they're full-blown vegan." She brought chicken in anyway...dramatically undercooked.

Sometimes relying on the kindness of volunteers isn't the best idea.

re: Aunt Voula

careful, thats my big fat greek family you're talking about! I grew up in that restaurant as a short order cook! man, the souvlaki and texas weiners we had! and the gyros!

seriously, my wife's big fat greek family runs dengeo's in skokie IL, for all you cubs and chisox fans. it's indistinguishable from the restaurant in my big fat greek wedding, except that the portions they give you on your plate for under ten bucks are enormous. best greek meal in chicago.
