Hanley Homers
Hanley Ramirez capped a five-hit night with a home run to defeat the Dodgers 5-4 in eleven innings.
Ramirez, the starting shortstop for the NL in next Tuesday's All-Star game, was 5-for-6 and raised his average to .317. The Marlins' leadoff hitter singled his first three times up and doubled in his next at-bat. His 23rd homer of the season came off Brian Falkenborg (1-2)
I still wonder if the Ramriez trade was the right move for Boston. Beckett's had one great year. Lowell's been terrific, but would Youkilis at third have been so bad? Hanley is likely to be smacking the ball around long after Lowell's career is over. Given the results in Boston, no Red Sox fan is going to complain I can imagine a Boston roster with Ramirez being just as potent and possibly a bit less expensive.
Update: The Marlins have to be happy with Josh Johnson as well. In his first start in a year, he pitched five innings, walking none and striking out six.

No doubt in my mind it was the right move for Boston unless Beckett takes a huge step backward over the next couple of years. I'm not sure how you can say their roster would be just as potent with Ramirez in place of Beckett and Lowell. Who would be the #1 pitcher?
When you win a World Series you question nothing.
Yes, you do question moves. It's that sort of viewpoint that leads to dangerous quashing of criticism that is often necessary to have.
And David, we'll still have to see how Anibal Sanchez, Jesus Delgado and Harvey Garcia turn out to truly analyze this long term. Short term it definitely worked out well for Boston.
Pretty much - Ramirez was the chip they used to get the ALCS MVP and the WS MVP. Over the long run maybe it will turn out that they could have made other moves and won the WS with Ramirez. It's hard to think who else they could have received who would have replaced Becket last year in the post season and make no mistake about it - with Ramirez at SS and without Lowell at 3B and Becket Boston wouldn't have been in the playoffs much less the WS.
With a World Series win the trade edge goes to the sox. With that carpetbagger Loria down here ,Ramir ez may still end up in Boston because the fish will claim they cannot aford him.The latest Marlin stadium scam is already in trouble.
Go look at the box scores from the '07 postseason games Beckett started. 4 Starts, 30 Innings pitched, 4 (earned) runs.

Joe Cronin having Sox sell Pee Wee Reese to Bklyn thus losing a HOF SS. Joe Cronin as AL Pres in 1961 freezing AL rosters for expansion & causing Sox to not protect Jim Fregosi from being picked by LA. Lou Gorman trading Jeff Bagwell for little used P L. Anderson. Sox front office not taking A Rod because of a few mil more. Ramirez gets better, while Beckett has regressed this year. Is a All-Star SS playing every day vice Julio Lugo better than a 5th day starter?
