Chipper Q&A

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution posts a very short interview with Chipper Jones critiquing the Braves (emphasis added):

Now we're at a stage where we're at that transition, having to deal with a lot of young pitchers coming up and going through their growing pains, and we've got a lot of young hitters in the lineup who haven't, um, grasped what it's like to be a hitter every day in this league. And we're struggling as a team because of it.

I wonder if Chipper is talking about making adjustments, and specifically about Jeff Francoeur?

Chipper Jones, of all people, should not be criticizing people about being a hitter EVERY DAY in this league. He hasn't played even 140 games since 2003.

What an odd comment.

Chipper's had a hall of fame caliber career and is hitting the ever-loving crap out of the ball this year.

What qualifications is he missing for hitting criticism?

The "every day" part. As in, the part I capitalized in my comment. That's the qualification he's missing.

I'm not ragging on his skills, I was just pointing out the irony in the word choice he used, given that he's one of the most fragile hitters in the game. Next time, I will bold and italicize the capital letters to make it more clear.

I don't think Chipper is talking about injuries. He's talking about mental preparation. At least, that's the way I read it.

Guys - I realize this. It's IRONY, and I find it funny. I thought others would too. I was wrong.

If it was irony, you should have phrased it a little less aggressively. Something like, "Isn't it ironic that Chipper Jones -- who hasn't played 140 games since 2003 -- is criticizing his teammates for not being an everyday hitter?" Maybe toss in a joke about wanting the weekends off or something. But, you know, not phrasing it like righteous indignity at his comments.
