Loney Doubles

The first hit in the Braves/Dodgers game comes in the bottom of the fifth when James Loney leads off with a double. Seems hits are tough to come by early in games in this series.

Update: Lowe still has a no-hitter through six.

Update: Actually, he's perfect.

Update: Kemp gets the second hit of the game in the bottom of the sixth, a solo home run that puts Los Angeles up 1-0.

Update: Blanco leads off the seventh with a single. No no-no tonight.

A 27-out double no-hitter is about as rare as a no-hitter (27-out variety) by a single pitcher.

It's the longest double no-hitter of the year, exceding the 25-out effort by Westbrook and Danks on Apr. 3.

Hudson is off the board, but Lowe is still working on his gem.

The Braves are 0 for 36 in the first four innings of the three innings of this series. I thought it was the Dodgers who couldn't hit or score?

A quick glance reveals this was a 27-out double perfect game. Much, much rarer. In fact, only five are known to have occurred. Here is the list:

30 outs, Dennis Martinez, MON vs. Mike Morgan, LAD, July 28, 1991
(Martinez pitched a perfect game)
29 outs, Dean Chance, LAA, vs. Whitey Ford, NYY, Aug. 10, 1963
29 outs, Greg Hibbard, CHW, vs. Andy Hawkins, NYY, July 1, 1990
(the infamous 4-0 no-hit loss for Hawkins)
27 outs, Sandy Koufax, LAD, vs. Bob Hendley, CHC, Sept. 9, 1965
(Koufax pitched a perfect game)
27 outs, Kevin Appier, KC, vs. Jim Converse, SEA, May 22, 1993

So this game ranks #4 on the all-time list (Retrosheet era). If you were there, you saw a real rarity.

The Braves now have 24 straight 1 run loses on the road, which is a major league record.

Good God, I should hope so. Since 1-run decisions are close to random, I would have guessed the record to be a lot lower.
