Sabathia Traded

According to the Brewers Blog at JS Online, the Brewers reached an agreement to trade for C.C. Sabathia.

All I know so far is that top prospect Matt LaPorta is in the deal. I was told two lower-level minor leaguers also are included. The Brewers refused to include another top prospect such as Alcides Escobar or Mat Gamel.

Look for Sabathia to make his debut for the Brewers Tuesday night at Miller Park against Colorado.

Wow. The Indians didn't even wait to see if there was going to be much bidding over the next three weeks. I'll have more in a few minutes.

Update: I was just looking at LaPorta's minor league numbers. What's impressive is his home run rate, 32 in 411 minor league at bats. That's one every 12.8 at bats. He's also getting on base at a .395 clip. What I don't like is that he's pretty far along on the offensive side of the defensive spectrum, as he's played left, first and DH in the minors. We'll see what kind of prospects the other two players are.

The Brewers now match Zambrano and Dempster with Sheets and Sabathia. That should make for an exciting NL Central race.

Are there no major leaguers because milwaukee's going to blow all of their cash on signing CC for 4 years? Or is this going to be a short-term rental before he flies to the big money?

I heard a rumour last night that he was going to Milwaukee... but I dismissed it, because it's way early. You'd think that Cleveland would've waited to see if there could be a bidding war and maybe get an even better deal. I'm shocked he went before the All-Star break. Shocked. Wow!

The talk in Milwaukee is they won't be able to sign Sabathia after this season. With Sheets also potentially gone management wants to make a run for the playoffs now.

Matt LaPorta is probably the best pure hitting prospect in the minor leagues. He can absolutely rake. He will be a 30 home run threat as soon as next year.

I'm a cub fan, but i love this move for the brew crew. With Sheets probably gone after this year, and the mid-minors stacked with high quality prospects, make the run THIS year. If it doesn't work out, take the picks, and with all that talent, you're the Rays in two years.

It makes sense, and really, who do the Indians think they'll be able to get better than LaPorta? Remember the prospects that Santana got? And that was Santana!

With all due respect, Mr. Paradise, but who exactly won the AL Cy Young last year?
Yeah, the tubby guy in the Indians' uniform.

I've got to echo the other comments wondering why Shapiro didn't wait and let the tension build. I guess we'll see how good of a GM he really is.

Brewers still have a spotty lineup and a weak bullpen. IMHO the Indians didn't get all that much in return. They trade the reigning Cy Young and get nobody who can come in and play unless they are going to promote LaPorta 2 levels.
