Bats Back On

The Phillies bats came to life tonight as they knocked out 14 hits and two home runs against the Braves to take the game 8-3. Victorino and Burrell each went deep to plate three of the runs, and six Phillies picked up two hits each. Kendrick made a good start, and the bullpen pitched great again, shutting out the Braves over the last three innings.

Chipper Jones went one for three with two walks. His average drops to .393.

Update: The Chipper Jones graph is up to date. His chance of hitting .400 is now 0.0006.

re: brett myers going to aaa

1) it was a good move putting myers in the rotation this year. He had 200 strikeouts as a starter in 2005 and 2006 and 15 win shares each of those years, approximately.

2) there was no way to expect that myers would have had the problems he's had this year giving up homers or runs as he's had.

3) he may just have injury or arm problems, or just need to work out his delivery issues in the minors.

4) if it is a permanent issue a la kerry wood, he would have to move back to the bullpen, but he has had some good starts this year.

5) the big problem even though he's been bad as a starter is finding another starter to replace him. it would be nice if the phils could swing a trade for one of the free agent starters from one of the non=contending teams. CC Sabathia in particular would be a good addition for the stretch run and would be a nice 1-2 punch with Cole Hamels in the playoffs against the Cubs or Cardinals tough starters.

6) the Phils have about 420 runs scored and allowed 320 runs so far, which works out to a pythagorean percentage of over .600 and a predicted wins total of nearly 100 games won for the season. Yet they are only six games over .500, at the half way mark, which means they'd have to play well over .500 to meet their pythagorean expectation (at least twenty games over .500 the last 81 games). That's actually a little weird.
