Somehow lost in all the badmouthing is the simple fact that the Astros have had more success under McLane's ownership than at any other time in their history. But I guess Royal forgot about that.
After all, it's easy to overlook four division titles and two wild card wins in McLane's fifteen years (1993-2007) as owner, not to mention the second highest-winning percentage in the NL during that time.
The Astros are having a tough year, like any team will. So the Royals of the world pile on.
The Astros did plenty fine getting to the playoffs and then sucking long before Drayton was owner.
By hiring Ed Wade instead of any number of actually competent GMs, McLane cemented the Astros' status as a basement team for at least the next 5 years. Mr. Blind Defender of Your Favorite Team.
Since when are the Astros my favorite team? I could not care less if they win or lose. And I'm not a blind defender of anything.
I believe in looking at the record and giving credit where credit is due. If you're going to blame McLane for Chacon's assualt and battery (a massive stretch, to say the least) give him some credit for the Astros' excellent record under his ownership.
