Turnaround Fair Play

With an 8-4 win over the Rockies tonight, the Kansas City Royals are now 9-2 in their last 11 games. During their losing streak, they would lose when the pitching performed well, dropping games 2-1, 3-1 and 4-3. They'd lose when they offense worked well, finding themselves on the wrong end of 11-8 and 9-8 scores.

Now that's turned around. In these nine wins they've taken games by scores of 2-1, 3-2 and 4-1, as well as big scoring games like Sunday's 11-10 come back win against the Giants. The starting pitchers are definitely better as they've posted a 3.04 ERA over the last eleven games.

They're the best NL team in the American League. They've gone 10-3 against the NL...best of all AL teams.

As a lifelong Royals fan, this team is excruciating to root for. I kept saying throughout spring training how the they needed to avoid their usual horrific start...they managed to get 41 games into the season before they spun in (20-21). A couple losing streaks, a stretch where they went 5-19, and it was business as usual. Now they put together a good stretch against the NL, get me enthused again, and now they'll probably whip up a nice 9- or 10-game losing streak...

The surefire cure for any AL team is those powerhouses from the senior circuit. The NL now has a nifty .421 winning percentage in interleague play. Eleven of the fourteen AL teams have winning records against the mighty National Leaguers.

But hey, the NL won one game last night! Go league!

Halfway seriously, the NL isn't this bad. But they're playing like wimps right now.

I think they are what they are - since '03 they've won 4 WS games and would't have won those except the Tiger pitchers couldn't throw to any base. I think the overall level of competition hurts them. You really don't have to be that good to contend in a league that had 1 team win exactly 90 games last year. When a pitcher changes from the AL to the NL everyone assumes he's going to improve or survive or whatever because he's going to a weaker league. That's a bad sign.
