Winning the Close Ones

The Angels score two runs in the eighth to down the Washington Nationals 3-2. Bergman pitched very well for Washington, allowing six hits over seven innings without a walk while striking out six. He left with a 2-1 lead, but Saul Rivera and two defensive errors gave it away in the eighth.

Francisco Rodriguez picked up his 31st save of the season in the team's 77th game. When Thigpen set the save record in 1990 with 57, he saved 27 games through the White Sox first 77.

That great save percentage is helping the Angels keep winning despite outscoring their opponents by just 14 runs. They are now 15-9 in one-run games, the best record in those close contest in the American League.
