The Jam Innings
The Cardinals and Red Sox are tied at three after eleven innings. Both teams got in and out of trouble in the first two extra frames. Nine men reached base in the first four half innings, and both the Cardinals and Red Sox left the bases loaded in the eleventh. In each frame, at least one man reached scoring position.
Update: Chris Duncan gets thrown out at the plate in the top of the 13th inning. I have no idea why they sent him to the plate. He wasn't running fast and Drew's throw was strong and true. Varitek had time to secure the ball and prepare himself the collision. Duncan bowled Jason over, but Varitek held onto the ball, and Duncan never touched the plate.
In the top of the inning, Lowell smashed one off the wall to start the inning. He hit it so hard, it went for a single. Otherwise, it would have been the fourth inning in a row the Red Sox started with a double. Youkilis left nothing to doubt as he followed with a home run into the Monster seats, and Boston wins 5-3. They extend their lead over the Rays to 1 1/2 games, as Tampa Bay falls to Houston 3-2.
