Worn Out

The Mets looked tired last night. The team made three physical errors and one mental one. The play in the field looked sloppy overall. It makes you wonder if the late night firing of Willie Randolph caused the players to have a sleepless night. After two games Sunday, a late west coast flight, another game Monday, and the drama of Tuesday, the team just didn't look ready to play.

Minaya wanted to fire Randolph as soon as possible after he made his decision, out of respect for Willie. I don't think it would have made that much of a difference if Omar had let everyone sleep Monday night and fired Willie over breakfast. Sure, maybe a newspaper would have broken the story, but everyone, including Willie, expected the firing soon. The unnecessary drama appears to have lowered the probability of the Mets winning on Tuesday, and against Lackey they fall 6-1.

I couldn't care less about the Mets. I think they're an overpaid, overrated team that's capable of .500 ball at best. The only reason they get so much attention is the city they play their home games in.

Randolph should have been fired after last year's laughable collapse. Although I doubt that even a good manager could do much to improve this aging, mediocre team, Randolph couldn't seem to get anything right.

All that said, it seems pretty ridiculous to single out the Mets for last night's horrendous display by the entire NL. The senior circuit looked like a joke, losing 12 of 14 to the AL and often getting blown out in the process. Even the two good teams in the league - the Cubs and Phillies - lost their games.

The AL has now romped to an overall 59-42 record in interleague play. That's right, the National League is playing at a swell .416 winning percentage.

Now I don't think the NL is really that bad. I expect they will close the gap with the junior circuit. But the Mets are only typical of a league with too many mediocre to poor teams.

AL 12-2 vs jv league yesterday. 7 NL teams score 1 run or less. Santana, Hudson and Webb all get knocked out.

The Phillies should have fired Gene Mauch in 1964 and stopped his 20 plus year managerial career also!!!
