Rays Record

Scott Kazmir set a (Devil) Rays record for wins in a month with five. He picked up a short shutout with seven scoreless innings against the White Sox. A change this year with Kazmir and the Rays is that he's going deeper in games, putting less pressure on the bullpen, and the bullpen is no longer ruining his good starts.

Hat tip, BBTF.

What's all this about short shutouts? It's not a shutout unless he pitches a complete game. He gave up zero runs, that's it. If a player goes 3 for 3 with a single, double, and HR, does he hit for the short cycle?

What's all this about inside the park home runs? It's not a home run unless the ball goes over the wall. He scored a run during the same plate appearance he got a hit, that's it. If a player hits a foul ball deep in the corner, does he hit a inside the park foul ball?

Sarcasm aside, giving a name to something is not a crime. It's infinitely more convenient to say "short shutout" instead of "gave up zero runs in the 5 or more innings that he pitched to start the game". (yes, infinitely).

(and now I'm curious whether anyone has hit an inside the park cycle.)

Apparently Harry Danning did it in 1940.

From Wikipedia:

His home run comes on an inside-the-parker that landed 460 feet on the fly in front of the Giants' clubhouse, wedged behind the Eddie Grant memorial.

Good times.
