I Don't Think A-Rod is Going to Make a Difference

I went up eat dinner after Mike Mussina recorded the second out of the first inning. He had a man on second. I come back, and the Orioles have scored seven runs, partially because of an error by Jeter extending the inning. Mussina, however, gave up five hits, including a double and a triple, and Ohlendorf is in to try to get out of the first.

Update: When do Yankees fans turn on Jeter? He made the error that opened the doors to six unearned runs in the first, then when Damon leads off with a single in the bottom of the inning, Jeter hits into a double play. He's hitting over .300, but his OBA is poor for him at .347. With the rest of the team also hitting poorly, there's plenty of others to blame. At what point does he stop getting a pass?

As a Yankee fan, let me say never.

A lot of Yankee fans just don't understand what it takes to win baseball games. These are the people who think Jeter is a great SS, even though he can't move 3 steps away to pick up a routine grounder.

Now that he's blowing simple plays, maybe everyone else will catch on, but I doubt it.

Kiss the rings, after all.

I agree he has poor range, but he usually makes up for that with above average positioning. Factor in his offense and above average arm... even those that DO know what it takes are able to look the other way. I don't think he'll be winning a Gold Glove in the near future though... That's just a side note however...

The real note is that Suzyn Waldman just jynxed him.

She was talking about how Britton was sent down to make room for A-Rod. She said something along the lines of "Everytime Britton gets sent down, something happens and he has to turn right back around." The VERY NEXT PITCH, Jeter gets hit in the hand and taken out of the game with what Sterling and Waldman hypothesize as a broken bone in his hand.

Nothing broke: "X-rays were negative, and Jeter is day-to-day with a bruised hand." (ESPN.com)

Ozzie freakin' Smith could be fielding short for this team and it wouldn't translate into more than a win or two.

Jeter gets a pass because he's helped the team win four titles, provided the fans with a ton of thrilling moments and hasn't done anything disgraceful off the field. Is it really that tough to understand?

He's also the only Yankee hitting w/RISP (15-35) this season. I daresay the positives still outweigh the occasional error or missed ball through the gap.

He's not really their problem - unless he can start on the mound a couple of days a week he won't really be able to turn things around.

He keeps winning Gold Gloves even though he is statistically the worst SS of the last 50 years.

Eternity is a long time to spend in hell, Derek.

Derek Jeter is untouchable because he's the face of the era that won all those rings. I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for fans to turn on him, and if they do, he'll probably say something like "They're paying to see me play well and right now I'm not, so they can boo me all they want." And there will be no story.

Jeter is teflon because he never gives anyone anything to pick at. He's a PR genius in that respect.
