How Old Mark Teixeira?

River Ave. Blues makes a good point about the New York teams trying to replace their first basemen with Mark Teixeira:

But the problem is that Teixeira will be a breath of fresh air only until he too starts getting old. I don't think Teixeira will sign for anything less than seven years, and while I'm not opposed to the idea, his contract will eventually be as problematic as Jason Giambi's and Carlos Delgado's are right now. While "in with the young, out with the old" is a sound philosophy, the young grow old quickly.

Given the difficulties both squads are experiencing at first I would be shocked if either went that long. Seems like it will be Hank's call in the Bronx, and I expect the Mets to pass outright based on price and terms.

Texeira's 28 now would be 29 the start of next year The one thing about Texeira in his favor is he can play 1B and bats B - NYY is going to have Posada for 3 more and it's unlikely he's going to be able to catch - another year of Damon and Matsui as well I believe - 7 yrs seems like a long time for a guy who may not be as good outside of Texas - plus someday NYY will have to make a move with Jeter - maybe not next year but certainly before 7 yrs.

I think the Yanks would be a good fit for Tex. The Yankees seem to be able to take veteran players with large egos who only care about money and keep them from being a clubhouse cancer.

Giambi only has the third highest OPS on the team. Why is New York so hellbent on replacing him? Not even the Yanks "brain trust" is dumb enough to take batting averages seriously.

The O's could be in the running too, don't count them out.

Are you implying that Giambi is living up to his contract somehow?? He's an average 1st baseman both in the field and at the plate and, so far, below avg this year. Having the 3rd best OPS on a poor offense isn't so great for someone who gets his salary. Also, BA is directly proportional to how many hits you get. how much longer will pitchers walk a guy who doesn't hit, or seems happy to hit into a shift?
