Bad Offenses

The game between Mark Buehrle and Barry Zito proved not to be a slugfest Saturday night as the White Sox won 3-1. Looking at the linescore, however, the pitchers had little to do with it. Both gave up more hits than innings pitched. Both walked more batters than they struck out. Buehrle pitched better, however, and his defense supported him with three double plays. He pitched into the seventh for his second win.

The White Sox offense has to be wondering why they didn't score more last night. Zito walked six in five innings, and allowed eight hits. That's almost three base runners per inning, yet Chicago pushed across just two runs. They were only 1 for 8 with men in scoring position last night.

Of course for Barry, this was not a good sign. Once again, a high pitch count forces him out of a game early, and the control he showed since his return from the rotation vanished. It's starting to look like his flaws aren't going away that easily.
