No Place Like Dome

The Rays win their eleventh home game in a row, defeating the Yankees in extra innings 2-1. Floyd singled, Gomes ran and stole second, then scored on a Gross single. It was the first run allowed by Mariano Rivera this season, out for his second inning of work. Tampa Bay allowed just 22 runs in the 11 games, pitching three shutouts. The win moves the Rays into first place in the AL East 1/2 game ahead of the Red Sox.

There were 16,558 fans at the game tonight. Rays fans, you finally have a good team. Get out and support them! The new ownership worked hard to put this group together. Reward their effort with a couple of sellouts!

I would agree that fan turnout has to go up, but the problem with going to the games is the time it takes the average person to commute to the stadium since its all the way in downtown st. pete. I bet if it was located in tampa we would be at least averaging games around 25k.

Have they ever sold out after opening day 1998? I see a Cleveland game and a start by Orel Hershiser in that year that drew more than 40k. The big crowds came out for the Indians in the late 90's and the Red Sox and Yankees more recently. More people showed up to see the Red Sox on April 25th than the entire previous series against Toronto. The rays won 5 of 6 but I guess it's going to take a 20 game winning streak to get the fans to drive out for a game.

Historically, road games bring them down every year... but so far this year they're almost .500 on the road while continuing to be a good home team (let's call last year an anomaly). I'm starting to believe they're for real... but I keep having flashbacks of the '03 Royals who faded fast after the trade deadline.

They obviously could--and, indeed, likely will--fade, but looking at their roster, they have a lot more talent than the 2003 Royals, no?

If their rotation stays solid they might hang in there for a while in a down year. The middle of their lineup needs to get going - Upton, Pena and Longoria are doing nothing right now.
