Chavez to Rehab

Eric Chavez will begin his rehabilitation assignment on Thursday. He can come off the disable list May 27th, but the Athletics expect it to take longer.

Chavez will need to be up to full speed for his return. Jack Hannahan is playing well. He's getting on base at a .402 clip despite a low batting average. He offers little power, however, slugging just .372. Chavez, however, hasn't posted an OBA near that level since 2005. Unless Eric comes back pounding the ball out of the park, I'm not sure the A's aren't better off sticky with Hannahan.

I don't know how Hannahan is defensively, but if Chavez can post a slightly lower OBP (say ~20 points lower) and the same slugging, his game-changing D could make him more valuable.

Hannahan's stickiness might explain his defensive success at third.
