Longoria Goes Long
John Garland and James Shields matched goose eggs for eight inning. Shields came out for the ninth and kept the shutout intact, throwing just 92 pitches. He was likely coming out for the tenth if the game went that far. B.J. Upton singled against Speier to start the ninth, and one out later Longoria launched a ball into the leftfield stands for a 2-0 Rays victory. Tampa Bay stays in second place and moves three games above .500. Shields goes to 3-0 at home, and he's allowed just four earned runs in 31 innings there.
