Pat on the Bat

Pat Burrell won some Philadelphia hearts tonight as he hits a two-out, two-run homer to defeat the Giants 6-5 in ten innings. San Francisco scored in the top of the inning, as former Phillie Aaron Rowand hit a solo shot. After an Utley single and a Howard strikeout, Burrell hit the first long ball of the season off Brian Wilson. All six Phillies runs scored on two-run homers as Utley and Feliz went deep earlier.

re: aaron rowand

that would be aaron "i run through centerfield walls to catch balls" rowand.

it's almost three years later, I was at the park the night he went through the wall to catch the ball, and i'm still awestruck at the pete reiser/pete rose like intensity with which aaron rowand played that night, and the incredible swell of standing ovation that arose from the mighty philadelphia crowd for him when he was taken by stretcher away from the field, probably still clutching the ball in his hand or glove.

of course the story has taken on mythical proportions, and of course rowand has used the story to cash in on a huge free agent deal with the giants (what's he getting 30 million for five years, 40 million) and it somehow doesn't seem entirely right he's no longer a phillie.

but last night's game between the phils and giants showed rowand at his best, the hero for the giants and putting on a show for the fans who have always loved him the best, the fans of philadelphia.

he will always have a place here. like tony taylor, dick allen, richie ashburn, robin roberts and many others, aaron rowand will always be a phillie in the hearts of philadelphians.

and for everyone else, he'll always be the guy who's willing to run through walls to catch the balls.
