Chase Utley hit home run number twelve tonight, bringing his major league leading total for the year to twelve. That's four more than any other player in the majors. He's picked a good year to try to lead the league in long balls, as no one else seems to be off to a great start.

He's hitting more than home runs as well. He also has ten doubles and a triple for twenty three extra base hits, more than half of his forty two hits. He's walked eleven times to push his OBA well over .400. He's the complete hitter this season.

Utley is a joy to watch every game. He does everything well. It's amazing how much power he gets from such a compact swing.

He's a classic sandlot rat, playing a gazillion innings in his life so he knows instantly where to be, what to do, how to act.

And as the father of a Little Leaguer who plays a lot of second base (where the weaker players get "hidden"), Utley makes it OK to play second base. That's the hidden value of a guy like Utley. He gives struggling kids a role model in their position.

Who scores ahead of Burrell to help win the game?
Yup.

Lance Berkman has 9. That's a good start...

re: chase utley

chase utley is on a march to be philly's 3d mvp in as many years.

plus, as bill james so wittily observes in his very fine new book, there is a rule that the MVP award can't go to any new york met, so david wright is always the wrong choice.

utley also had 35 plus hits in april. his overall pace is for 200 plus hits, 60 doubles, 60 homers, etc. obviously you'd think he couldn't keep it up but just as clearly it's an amazing april and a large reason the phils scored more runs than they allowed and had a winning record in april.

He really has been pretty breathtaking to watch, so far this season.
