Heart of the Tigers

The Tigers sweep the Yankees with an 8-4 victory tonight. The middle of the order did a lot of damage tonight as Ordonez, Cabrera and Guillen combined to go seven for thirteen with two walks, and Sheffield added two walks from the third spot. Magglio and Carlos picked up doubles, while Cabrera added a triple and a homer. The Quartet scored and drove in five runs as they were too much for Kennedy and Albaladejo, who each gave up four runs. This is exactly what the Tigers were expecting when they assembled this lineup.

Well anyone who beats the Skanks is A-OK by me. Glad to see the Tigers take care of business...for now anyway.

Sadly, the Yankees are still in pretty good shape. Nobody has really played very well or very poorly in the AL East. The run diffs fall in a tight range, from Tampa Bay's +23 to the Yanks' -12. Not surprisingly, all the teams are within 4 1/2 games.

The Yankees are getting long in the tooth, and it's probably harder and harder for aging vets to get motivated for early season games. But if the Yanks don't get hopelessly buried, which doesn't seem likely, I'm afraid we'll hear from them later this year.

In April of 2007 the Yankees were twelfth in team ERA and third in team OPS.

In April of 2008 the Yenkees were eleventh in team ERA and fifth in team OPS.

Not much has really changed. The Yankees have gotten off to a slightly slower start with the bats this year. Last year they rebounded nicely and made the postseason. We'll see what they do this year.
