Cordero Worth It?

Here's a criticism of Wayne Krivsky I haven't heard. He wasted money on Francisco Cordero. The Reds' closer picked up his fourth save in four opportunities tonight and is pitching well in general. However, he only has four saves. He's a perfect example of how little a great closer can do if the team can't get him the lead. Until a team can get a game to the ninth inning with a lead on a regular basis, should a GM spend a lot of money for one relief pitcher, or should he spend it on hitters or starters who make the closer necessary?

Correction: Had the wrong Cordero.

1) It's not Chad. If it was Chad then it would have been a horrible move

2) Its worth it to me. Think about the team that's been constructed and how well it's set up in the future. Maybe they dont win this year, but next year they should easily be a favorite.

Also remember that Saleries increase every year. If they wait 2 years, maybe they lack that closer needed for a run. Maybe it'll cost 15-16M. Maybe it'll be a 4 year deal when the core has moved past its prime.

People will always say its too much, but in 4 years it might look cheap. That's how it works in baseball. Cordero isnt "old" and top closers usually last longer so it isnt a huge risk.

Definitely worth it. Reds have lost too many one-two run games of in recent history. He's had a pretty idle start due to some limp Reds offense, but I have a feeling there will be more instances like tonight where Cordero will be invaluable.

Yes, overpriced, but I agree with MlbFan30, that they're probably going to save on the deal in it's 3rd or 4th year.

The Reds will be regretting that contract in a few years.

I'm surprised that you hadn't heard this criticism I heard. While I thought it was a decent move given the market and the high-ish hopes for Cinci next year, I recall it getting generally panned (or at least 50-50 opinions) with people usually saying it was either too much for a closer of Cordero's quality or just the wrong type of move in general.

Bad buy. It's like buying dessert before you've even had the main course. Will you be hungry after you eat the meal, enough to have a goodie? If you don't know, then you shouldn't get ahead of yourself and buy the sweets so early.

I said it about 90 times - He can close out the 9th when they're behind 9-3. Good players always help but it really doesn't fill your overall team needs.
