Positive Start
Phil Hughes follows Mike Mussina's games with a short but good start of his own. Hughes pitched two innings, allowing one hit and striking out one before a rain delay ended his night. By not going deeper, he didn't get a chance to pitch badly, so he can walk away from the game with a lower ERA and a positive appearance.

Maybe divine intervention brought the rain. With Hughes out of there, the Yanks bullpen reeked, especially Ohlendorf and the sainted Joba.
Despite the loss, and much as I would like to believe otherwise, the Yankees are in pretty good shape. Even with a nice run of luck for the Red Sox, who owe their first-place position to an unsustainable 5-0 mark in one-run games, the Yanks are only 2 1/2 out.
New York has really played about as well as the rest of the division, as the expected W-L numbers show. I figure their sputtering offense will start cranking sooner or later.
