Shift Across the Diamond

Jim Leyland decided to switch Miguel Cabrera and Carlos Guillen defensively. So now Miguel's followed the full Albert Pujols path.

Path, sure. But Pujols has proven to be arguably the best defensive full-time first baseman in the majors. Never say never, but... well, Miggy's never going to match Pujols' defense at first.

Pujol is definitely a very good player and he will be tough to defeat. He is a young player who is on his way to hall of fame. I don't think he can be defeated easily.

Hehe... if you say so.

Derek Lee can run circles around Pujols defensively.

Pujols only wins gold gloves because he hit.

It's not me who says so. UZR says so (best full-timer for the period of 03-07), PMR says so (best in 07, best in 06, 6th in 05), SFR says so (best in 07, best in 06, 8th in 06)...

There's a lot of disagreement about defensive metrics, but when the same name keeps coming out at the top of the list every which way you slice the numbers, odds are he's pretty darn good.

Pujols is better at 1B than other positions but I'm with Dave - Lee is better, Mentkiewicz is much better. There are very, very few good fielding 1B now because most everyone's looking for some guy to bash.
