Third Time the Charm
Twice tonight the Cardinals scored in the top of an inning, and twice the Brewers came back to tie. In the ninth, however, the Cardinals finally scored a run the Brewers couldn't answer. St. Louis sandwiched a sacrifice between two doubles by Barton and Schumaker to plate the go-ahead run, then Isringhausen induced three ground outs to end the game. St. Louis wins 4-1 and goes to 5-1 in one-run games.

The Cardinals have caught good luck in one-games, but their +20 run diff is solid. Like everybody else I thought the team was gonna stink, and there's still plenty of time for them to smell bad.
But the bullpen has the second-best ERA in the NL, the starters are a respectable sixth in ERA, and the hitters are sixth in OPS. A nice all-round team effort so far. Now if La Russa would only can the asinine pitcher-hitting-eighth routine.
Oh, wait a minute. Izturis hits ninth. Maybe the pitcher hitting eighth ain't so asinine.
