That Whole Young Pitcher Thing Just Isn't Working Out

Ian Kennedy just got knocked out of the game after allowed four runs in 2 2/3 innings. Twice the Orioles bounced doubles off the centerfield wall and Kevin Millar took him deep. The O's also drew five walks.

Kennedy's ERA is now at 9.64 and Hughes sits at 8.82. The Yankees can survive these two posting ERAs between 4.50 and 5.00, but this is just too much. Is it time to send them down to see if they can regain their form, or should the Yankees just let them learn at the major league level? Kennedy tonight was just missing the corners. That forced him to throw strikes over the plate that the Orioles hammered. Can he move those pitches the smidgen toward the plate needed? Is he better off making that adjustment in the minors, and who should the Yankees pitch instead?

Why didnt Cashman sign a Kyle Lohse/Livan Hernandez as a Plan B?

Those guys are not spectacular but they eat up innings and don't get hurt.

I think Steve Trachsel is available via trade. ; )

Gladdens my heart to see the Yanks with the worst run diff in the division, by far. They have only luck to thank for (barely) not occupying the cellar. This team could really reek as the lineup continues to age and the young pitchers take their lumps.

But I may be getting too hopeful too soon. Let's check back at the end of May and see how the Yanks and their young hurlers are faring.

Ah Casey, back another season doling out the anti-Yankee sentiment, always hopeful, but cautiously so, at the prospect of their demise. I too think it's too early. I didn't see every pitch but didn't think Hughes or Kennedy pitched so bad in their last starts. Hughes got killed in one inning, but was doing well earlier in the game. Kennedy is a bit maddening with the nibbling, but I think if he sorts out location and learns to adapt more to mlb ump's varying strike zones, he'll be a good (but not spectacular) number 3 or 4. I don't think either have pitched well at all, but I also think the highness of their ERAs has to do with their bullpen letting virtually every single inherited runner to score. It wouldn't look as bad if their ERAs were hovering closer to 6 (yeesh).

Kennedy hasn't made it past 3 innings in three of his 4 starts and Hughes hasn't in 2 of his last 3 - you're hurting them by not sending them down where they can get some innings in. Not to mention they're killing the pen. I'm surprised as well that NYY didn't try to bring in a vet. The fact Mussina can't get to 90 pitches doesn't help. If they put Chamberlain in the rotation it's going to take a month to get him to 5 innings and you're going to have Farnsworth, LaTroy and Bruney in front of Rivera. They need pitching help in a big way.
