Maddux is one of my all-time favorite pitchers. I agree, truly remarkable...and don't believe anyone will ever get to 350 ever again.
Among my list of "rules in baseball I would tweak if I had the power," one of the entries is changing the win rule so that a pitcher cannot become eligible for a win after surrendering a lead--the win would either go to the previous pitcher if the lead is regained while the lead surrendering pitcher is still in the game or in the inning he is pinch hit for, or to the pitcher who is in the game later when the lead surrendering pitcher's team takes the lead for good. Obviously, it wouldn't get rid of *all* bullpen-vulturing wins, but it would send the proportion of wins registered by starting pitchers closer to historical norms.
Hmmm--could have worded that better; obviously, I meant that a relief pitcher wouldn't be able to become eligible for a win later after surrendering a lead.
