Marlins Impress
The Florida Marlins looked like a first place team tonight as they shutout the Atlanta Braves. The Braves came into the game with the second highest runs per game total in the National League. Scott Olsen went seven, and none of the three Marlins hurlers issued a walk. Renyel Pinto lowered his ERA to one with a scoreless inning of work to get the hold.

Much as I'd like to see the Fish contend - those acres of empty seats on Extra Innings are depressing - I'm skeptical. The Marlins are still significantly underwater on run diff and have caught 3-0 luck in one-run games. The staff is essentially the same collection of has-beens and never-weres that compiled the league's worst ERA last year...and is compiling the league's worst ERA this year.
The hitters are good and getting better, no doubt. But this team is always vulnerable to a blowout. If the pitching shows consistent signs of improvement - which it hasn't despite last night - I might start to believe.
