Mound Masters

The Minnesota Twins shutout the Royals 2-0 behind Boof Bonser and three innings from the bullpen. The two parts of the pitching staff have been very consistent. With tonight's game, the starters own a 3.22 ERA, the bullpen 3.48. This is without Johan Santana and Francisco Liriano. So far, it's the Twins offense that's holding them back, not their depleted pitching staff.

The AL Central is schizoid with its pitching staffs right now. Two are among the best in the league: KC first in staff ERA and Minnesota third. The other three are the worst: Chicago twelfth, Cleveland thirteenth, and Detroit dead last and fourteenth.

The Detroit and Chicago hurlers have been sliding down the ranks lately - ninth and twelfth last year in staff ERA. So their bad showings this season aren't that surprising. But Cleveland should be pitching much better after a third place finish in 2007. Sabathia has just been awful.

KC has quietly improved its pitching, with a seventh place finish last year. I don't know that they have the best staff in the league, though. Minnesota finished fourth last year, and it wasn't all Santana and Liriano. So they may pitch pretty well this season.
