Plate Controversy
The Phillies-Mets game appeared to end on a questionable call:
The winning play was closer than it originally looked, as centerfielder Jayson Werth charged Pagan's grounder and his perfect throw hit Coste directly in the mitt. Reyes slid and Coste applied a quick tag, but the runner was called safe.
"I had my hand there before he touched me," Reyes said.
From the Phillies' point of view, they should still be playing.
The Phillies' clubhouse was irate. At the loss. At the call. Regardless of whether their anger is justified, they fell to 4-6 in heartbreaking fashion.
I saw the play live, but didn't stick around for the replay. Reyes looked safe to me.

I thought he was safe as well, but I am partisan. It could have gone either way without right for complaint.
He was out. Close but out. The ump was in a terrible location given the way the play was developing. He let his view of the tag be blocked by Coste's body. Maybe that's an accident, but the ump's job is not to demand the play develop the way he wants to make his job easier.
Considering how many of those 9 straight Mets losses to the Phils hinged on the most bizarre breaks, I guess this is a small measure of revenge.
JR those pictures are inconclusive. The call could have gone either way, it was a split second decision by an ump with a poor view. That was my point re neither team have grounds for complaint. Nature of the game.
Watching the slo-mo replays again, it looks to me like Reyes was truly safe. He just barely slipped in in front of the tag. Those photos certainly don't show anything other than the need for a sharper camera.
Out.
He reached over home. Never touched it.
