A Win!

The Tigers break their seven game losing streak with a win over the Boston Red Sox. Detroit increased their run total by almost 50%, scoring seven times. Every player in the lineup reached base by a hit or a walk, with former Boston shortstop Edgar Renteria picking up three hits.

The Red Sox put plenty of men on base, collecting nine hits and five walks, but picked up just one hit with runners in scoring position.

Should the Red Sox be worried about Jon Lester? He walked four without a strikeout in this game, and he's now walked 10 with just seven strikeouts on the season. Pitchers tend not to last long with a K/BB under 1.0.

He looked like he did vs the Jays. His curveball was getting over for strikes but he was missing his spots with his fastball. His walk rates through the minors definitely do not scream dominant pitcher. He's not challenging the batters enough and getting behind. He should trust his very sound defense behind him.

Lester's always been overrated, and I say that as a Sox fan. I honestly don't really think he's capable of challenging batters; he never has any clue where his fastball is going to end up. He had one exceptional minor league season and the rest displayed his typical lack of command and an annual decline in strikeout rate. I don't really know why anyone should expect him to improve now, except for the fact that he's still real young and had his growth stunted by cancer.

That said, I didn't really like the umpiring tonight either. Didn't help him any.

They should find a way for Lester to only face the Rockies. Those guys were swinging at everything in the World Series. It's the only way Lester will succeed with his lack of command.

But that's OK, it's not like they kept him instead of trading for Santana. What's Santana done lately, anyway? Who wants to watch a bunch of low-scoring games and changeups nobody can hit...BORING I say. Lester is EXCITING.

And God knows they didn't want to trade ellsbury because on the days he doesn't sit on the bench he can hit 8th.
