On the Bench
The Red Sox are not taking the field for the game against Toronto. They're sitting on the bench.
Update: I really love this. For a long time, people like Al Bethke have been making a positive case for Bud Selig's legacy. Fortunately, every once in a while Bud reminds us that we dislike him because the organization he runs can be quite dishonest. Kudos to the Red Sox players for bringing that to our attention.
Update: The Red Sox players left the dugout and retreated to the clubhouse.
Update: There seems to be plenty of blame to go around on all sides.
According to WEEI in Boston, the A's players have also unanimously voted not to go to Japan if their coaches do not get paid.
Good for them. About 2 weeks ago Gammons wrote an article on how MLB is trying to strong arm the Cape Cod Summer league into using "official MLB" uniforms and souviniers.
While these players have millions of dollars it is good to see that they are standing up for the people who do not make the dollars they do.
BS. What a bunch of sanctimonious clowns. They should have cared about the coaches before this morning. All of a sudden they realize that the extra compensation (bribe) they extorted for making the trip isn't going to the folks who didn't have a say in making the trip. Every player should be fined for refusing to play today's game. $50 bucks a player for each minute today's game was delayed.
David,
Separately, how can you leap to the conclusion that MLB was dishonest in this matter. The union or the players make a statement and we assume they are telling the truth? Why? I'm not sure I'd want you on a jury if you only need one side presented to make decision.
This is awesome.
Rarely do we hear about something like this from professional athletes.
I am very impressed.
