Gunning for Delgado

Carlos Delgado was hurt in a freak gardening batting accident:

The slugger hit an RBI double in the third inning and later took a lead off third base.

Brady Clark swung and broke his bat, and the jagged barrel sailed down the line and speared Delgado on the outside of his right forearm. Right away, his arm was covered in red streams.

"It was a lot more blood than I wanted to see," Delgado said.

Delgado immediately left the game and exited with a small bandage. He was previously scheduled to be off Monday and expected to be out a couple of days.

Delgado wanted to throw the bat at Mike Piazza, but couldn't locate the former Met. :-)

And after throwing the bat at Piazza, Delgado would claim he thought it was the ball.

And then he would go on to "retire" from baseball multiple times.

And he would name his children Herman Robert Delgado, Henrietta Rachael Delgado, Hubert Ricardo Delgado, and Henry Redding Delgado.

And then he would be called before Congress for.....

Oh, nevermind.

I don't think this is funny. That's two players hit by jagged bat pieces so far. Someone -- a player or a fan -- is going to be seriously injured by one of these. What will have to happen before baseball does something?

"What will have to happen before baseball does something?"

A Congressional investigation.

Nah, that'll just get the tradition talk started: "Joe DiMaggio had to dodge jagged bat pieces all the time, and he didn't complain. Players today are just soft."

rfs1962....please tell me you are not serious. I suppose you think it's a good idea not to keep score at little league games this way no one gets thier confidence shattered and everyone is a winner? Why don't we just give them shields. How about giving the player the option of playing behind a batting practice screen; no bunting allowed of course. I know, let's get George Lucas to go around spring training instructing ballplayers on the ways of the Force. What do you say we post an American Gladiator with every position? Suffice to say I think your comment is way too reactionary.

I'm not sure you understand the word "reactionary." But yes, I'm serious. The bats don't have to break -- they are designed to break in an effort to get more power to the bat head. A hitter whose broken bat interferes with a fielder should not be allowed to reach base.

ok...you got me there RFS. I think your comments are a bit reactive....overreactive....extremely reactive.
