End of the Line?
Looks like age caught up with Juan Gonzalez:
The St. Louis Cardinals were awaiting results of an MRI on Juan Gonzalez's strained abdomen on Saturday, an injury that has marred his comeback attempt.
The test was done on Friday and was being evaluated by a specialist, team spokesman Brian Bartow said.
The 38-year-old Gonzalez, who has only one at-bat the last three years, missed his fifth straight game and did not make the trip Saturday for a game against the Mets. He had been listed as day-to-day two days earlier. Manager Tony La Russa said there had been no improvement.
"I do not think he was better this morning, and he's been resting and being treated," La Russa said after the Cardinals' 10-3 victory. "So that's not a good sign."
I'd be very surprised if Gonzalez is productive at all this season.

I was at Nolan Ryan's last start at Anaheim Stadium in September 1993--my mother and I got upper deck seats about five hundred feet from home plate and about one hundred and twenty feet up. We were sitting in our seats while the Rangers took batting practice, and I saw a tall, familiar figure step into the batter's box. I turned to my mother and commented, "Keep your eye on the field for the next few minutes--you might catch a baseball in the teeth if you don't pay attention."
Juan Gonzalez will probably not make it to the Hall of Fame--numbers and awards that would have gained him relatively easy entry thirty years ago will be subjected to intense scrutiny by those suspicious of the feats of the Steroid Era and aware of the flaws in his overall game. That being said, he was an awesome talent when he was young, and well worth the price of admission when he was on his game.
Good thing the Cardinals went with the untainted JuanGone and took a pass on Bonds.
