Bowa's Head

Jon Weisman makes a number of good points about Larry Bowa's refusal to wear a helmet.

I have to disagree with him. This rule was put into effect because of the death of Mike Coolbaugh yet a helmet wouldn't have helped him out at all (he got hit in the neck). Has there ever been a reported serious injury from a base coach getting hit in the head with a ball? If so, I could understand it but I don't think I've ever heard of one.

I'm just tired of over-reactionary legislation. Lets just enclose them in glass boxes. Or, put them in a box upstairs like in football, and they'll just coach with headphones in the helmet. Maybe they can just yell from the dugout using a megaphone. How about posting two American Gladiators to protect them and deflect screaming foul balls with thier Capt. America shields. Or perhaps Selig can ask George Lucas to go around the camps this spring and instruct 3rd base coaches in the ways of the Force. Say good night Gracie.......(curtain falls).

The solution is obvious...give them gloves.
