Concerned Rookies

Jay Bruce and Joey Votto issue an ultimatum. :-) Here's why:

Yesterday, Jay was taking some simulated at-bats off Gary Majewski and drew a walk. Dusty spit out his toothpick, stormed over and told Jay that "Walking is for dogs, not baseball players." Then he made Jay sit out in left field with a dog collar around his neck and told him that Hank Aaron never took a walk.

We checked, and Hank Aaron walked 1,402 times in his career. But Dusty said numbers are like trout: everyone has a few lying around somewhere, and it doesn't mean you're special. We don't know what that means.

Then he made Jay sit out in left field with a dog collar around his neck Just imagine if a white manager did that to a black player.

The weird thing about Dusty's obsession with walks and "clogging the bases" is that, as a player, he took quite a few walks. His career OBA was 69 points higher than his BA. That's not Rickey Henderson territory, but it's pretty damn high. And I don't think any of his managers ever put a collar around his neck.

And somehow I doubt that when Dusty was managing the Giants, he ever tried this gimmick on the king of OBA, Barry Bonds.

guys, this is a joke... at least I think it is

Sounds like a "rookie hazing" scenario. I doubt Baker was being belligerent, if he was, he should be fired or at least fined.

Bruce is way too precious and Baker, as well as the front office, knows it.

Well, the dog collar might be a joke, but Dusty's attitude toward walks is still weird and counterproductive. And out of line with the man's own career.

But did Dusty let him keep the sideburns? Or are they used as a sacrifice to Ken's hammy?

Guys, this is a joke. It isn't really by Jay Bruce and Joey Votto.

Pretty funny I thought.

The funny thing is that it's believable.

So the part about walking being for dogs and saying Hank Aaron didn't take walks is a joke too? I knew the majority was but I wasn't sure if the article was written after that incident or not

The whole thing was a joke. That's what the humor category and the :-) mean!
