Deflecting Attention

WasWatching praises Hank Steinbrenner for deflecting attention away from Andy Pettitte:

It's a page right out of Big Stein's playbook. Say or do something that will direct the attention towards you and away from the team or a player. Andy Pettitte is getting his share of press today. But, thanks to Hank, it's not all on Andy.

On the surface, Steinbrenner railing at football for having a bigger problem just seems like sour grapes. WasWatching may be giving Hank too much credit here, although the outcome is likely a good one. It reminds me of my favorite Toby quote from The Office:

Toby: [talking to the camera while Ryan and Kelly make out in through the window] I don't think Michael intended to punish me by putting Ryan back here with Kelly, but if he did intend that? Wow...genius.

I agree with Hank Steinbrenner. Baseball is being made the scapegoat for all steroids problems in sports, yet think of the high profile NFL players who have been suspended for them (Merriman, Rodney Harrison) and how it's been swept under the rug. If there was ever a Mitchell-esque Report on the NFL... look out.

Of course Hank is right about the NFL being overrun by steroids. Of course the people saying that he's trying to deflect attention away from baseball and the Yankees are right also. But that doesn't mean that the NFL isn't awash with steroids because of course it is.

The reason the NFL implemented steroid tested 20 years ago was because THEY NEEDED IT 20 YEARS AGO!!! That is how far ahead of the PED curve the NFL is, and always will be. The is no practical test for HGH yet in existence. After steroid testing started in the NFL it players had allready moved on to the next wave of PEDs, which included HGH and designer steroids that were not originally detectable in urine tests. By the time a useful HGH test comes into existence NFL players will have allready moved on to the next wave of PEDs. Here in lies the rub. The science/players are always ahead of the game.

It so totally figures that when someone with some national profile FINALLY speaks up and talks about something that no one wants to admit he'll just be painted as an old kook. But we all know that he is right.

This is not just a baseball problem. It is a sports problem. It is a societal problem.

All that being said. OFCOURSE it was sour grapes on Hank's part. As Tom pointed out above me, both are correct.
