Davis on Pettitte

It appears the original reason Pettitte won't appear before Congress was wrong:

Sources told Quinn that Pettitte was not a good witness when he appeared before congressional lawyers during a sworn deposition on Monday. Pettitte often contradicted himself, the sources said, so the committee agreed to his request not to appear Wednesday.

Lawyers familiar with the hearings would not say if Pettitte implicated Clemens as a steroids user in his testimony. However, they said that Pettitte's testimony didn't fully jibe with Clemens' versions of events.

So maybe there's less here than meets the eye.

Than meets the eye? Whose eye? It's clear he didn't throw clemens under the bus. But it does look like he chips away at clemens testimony.

There's no smoking gun in this whole thing, just little jabs here and there that shows clemens in a bad light.

another little jab..this time in McNamee's face...and to Senator Mitchell's cut and paste report

WASHINGTON -- Former major leaguer Jose Canseco told Congress in a sworn affidavit that he has never seen Roger Clemens "use, possess or ask for steroids or human growth hormone."

The affidavit, dated Jan. 22, was obtained by The Associated Press on Tuesday. It is part of the evidence gathered by the congressional committee looking at drugs in baseball.

The first mention of Clemens' name in the Mitchell report is on page 167. On the very next page comes McNamee's account of "a lunch party that Canseco hosted at his home in Miami."

"McNamee stated that, during this luncheon, he observed Clemens, Canseco, and another person he did not know meeting inside Canseco's house, although McNamee did not personally attend that meeting," the Mitchell report says.

In his affidavit, Canseco said, "I specifically recall that Clemens did not come to the bar-b-que. I remember this because I was disappointed that he did not attend. I later learned that he had a golfing commitment that day and could not attend the party."
