Footing the Bill

The Red Sox do not have insurance on Curt Schilling's contract. Edes indicates the Red Sox are worried about pitching, but I thought they were decently deep at the minor league level.

Hmm, maybe even the Sawx don't buy the hype about their prospects?

I think it's more an innings issue. They don't want Lester to get too close to 200, and I'd be surprised if Buchholz passes 160 or 170.

Plus with 2 rookies/comebackers (counting Lester), with Wakefield coming off injury all the sudden resigning Tavarez doesn't look so foolish after all. I just think with the expectations so high they don't want to have to put Lester and Buchholz into a lot of pressure situations and they don't know what they're going to get from Wake and Tavarez.

I always thought the depth talk was a little foolish anyway. Seven starters isn't a whole lot when two can't go above 170 innings, two are old and oft-injured, and one--Tavarez--is god-awful. Sure, they were deeper then most teams, but for them 6-7 starters were a necessity because of the absolute inevitability of their needing extra starters. They could have used another starter before and now it's just a little more important.

I agree with other josh, except I don't really think Tavarez is god-awful. He's a league-average pitcher, maybe slightly worse.

I'm sure the rest of the AL East would rather face Wakefield and Tavarez.

The Sox learned a lesson about pitching depth in 2006, when they traded Bronson Arroyo for Wily Mo Pena at a time when they thought they could spare a starting pitcher. Pretty soon, they're giving starts to the likes of Kevin Jarvis and Jason Johnson. The lesson: you can never have too much pitching.

Even if the Sox fully believe that Lester and Buchholz (and maybe even Masterson or Bowden) are ready to contribute to a championship run, it makes perfect sense to hunt for more depth. Besides, Mike (comment #2) is right: they don't want to overtax their young starters.
