Indeed, you wonder why trading someone like Santana, who is going to earn a free agent contract, is worth any prospects at all. If Santana is worth per year what his free agent contract gets, why would the Mets be willing to pay anything above and beyond that. It seems that what they are paying for is the first rights to negotiation. The issue is that the same player is not worth the same amount to different teams, as the Red Sox, MEts and Yankees have the ability to monetize a star through higher ticket, merchandise and TV rights sales, while the Twins don't.

What's missing from all the calculations of people who think the Twins got a bad deal is now they have the opportunity to spend $$$ in other ways to improve the team. Of course, part of the problem with baseball is that they won't spend the money on other players, they will just have a lower payroll while the Mets, Red Sox and Yankees.

Also, the Haren deal wasn't a 6-for-1 -- Connor Robertson was sent from the A's to the Diamondbacks along with Haren. You're right that Haren commanded more in return, but your analysis slightly overstates it.
