Yanked Out of Santana

The Yankees appear to be out of the Johan Santana sweepstakes. That puts less pressure on Boston to meet the Twins demands. So, does Minnesota take less than they want in a deal, or do they continue to wait to see if anyone else gets interested, or if the Mets come up with a better offer?

Honestly I think they will take the mets package of players in the end . Let the Yankees keep Hughes honestly the guy has such a high ceiling.

I agree, Hughes will be a better pitcher than Santana. All Hughes need is a clear head. Guidry needs to keep his butt on the bench and leave the kid alone.

Nice, perhaps we just put Hughes in Cooperstown now.

Hughes may be all he's cracked up to be, but the Yankees' overall pitching strategy for 2008 is damn risky. They appear to be counting on major contributions from at least three young pitchers, only one of which -- Chamberlain -- has had any success at the big-league level so far. More often than not, even extremely talented young pitchers have significant adjustment issues and/or injuries.

Meanwhile, the Yankees have an aging lineup and should, if anything, be looking to win now. Generally I'm in favor of holding onto prospects and judiciously planning for the future; but by the time Hughes, Kennedy and Chamberlain are all established pitchers, some of their core everyday players will be long gone or on the way out. And the odds are pretty overwhelming that all three will not pan out; a more likely scenario is that one will become a star, one will become a major-league contributor, and one will wash out. And that's the upside, generally speaking.

I agree jv - NYY has an old, inflexible lineup and if they move Chamberlain to the rotation then they've lost their best setup guy - they led the league in runs scored last year and were out in the 1st round - They signed a bunch of old guys to long term deals and are depending on injuries are going to have at least 2 and possibly 3 rooks in the rotation. Maybe Hughes will be better than Santana in the long run but Santana is a career 93-44 with a 1.0 WHIP. 2 time Cy Young winner - I saw Hughes last year and if I had to bet any of his career numbers at 28 will be better than Santanas I'd have to go against. Not to say he won't be an All-Star but he'd have to be a lot better than that to be as good as Santana. I have no issue with NYY holding on to their prospects but I would not have signed all these other guys to long term deals or at all if I was going to go with all the rooks in the rotation.
