MVPs and All Stars

I haven't seen any name leaked yet, but the Mitchell report will have some big names included:

MLB's "not going to love it, the union's not going to love it," he said.

The report comes at the end of a year when San Francisco Giants outfielder Barry Bonds broke the career home run record, only to be indicted on charges of lying to a federal grand jury about steroid use.

One source said that while the report will cite problems "top to bottom," it also will expose "deep problems, the number of players, high-level MVPs and All-Stars," as well as clubhouse personnel who allowed steroids and other banned substances in clubhouses or knew about it and didn't say anything.

Tomorrow's not going to be fun. The title of the post vaguely reminds me on an Aimee Mann lyric:

Cigarettes and red vines
Just close your eyes, cause,
Baby--
You never do know
And Ill be on the sidelines,
With my hands tied,
Watching the show
Watching the show

Yeah, no kidding. I hope everyone realizes that the only reason Bud is releasing the names is to make the players look bad and hopefully depress salaries. A perfect Bud Selig decision -- don't do what's good for the game long-term but only what matters for the next couple of weeks.

I wonder if the report is also going to take the owners and commissioner to task for turning a blind eye to the situation years ago; or at least not pressing the issue harder.

This isn't new, but word has it Clemens is on the list. That's according to his strength trainer.

I'm curious as to whether other fans share my feelings on this. I'm a die-hard Red Sox fan and there are certain players who I'd be heartbroken to see on the list. I'm 31 and know better than to let it bother me that much, but I can't help it.

More Aimee Mann lyrics please.

Perhaps the Yankees should be listening to "That's Just What You Are":

Acting steady
Always ready
to defend your fears.
What's the matter
with the truth?
Did I offend your ears?

Tom, just remember that so far as we know, a name's appearing on The List is not exactly damning. From what we've read so far, the report will leave lots of room for skepticism.

So, sure, as a Yankee fan I do really hope Mariano Rivera isn't named. But I won't be condemning any player, on any team, even in my own mind, just because the Mitchell Report includes his name on a list.

Why would they release the names then? The only reason is to hurt the players, isn't it? Wouldn't it be better to acknowledge the problem and try to move on? What possible good can come out of this? It just seems another example of the "Bud touch" (whatever he touches turns to sh*t).

Here's a quote from Bud from espn.com:

"People can say Bud was just trying to cover his butt or take care of his legacy or whatever," Selig said, according to the Tribune. "I say [bleep] it. This needed to be done, and now we've done it. I'm just happy it will be out there and we can move on. I'm proud of it."

Again, what purpose does it serve to release the names other then to embarrass the players? Again, it's typical baseball owner behavior, look for short-term gain instead of long-term growth.
