Going Ape

Anyone who can work a Planet of the Apes reference into a Tigers trade post deserves a link:

Had I slipped into a coma 4 years ago and woke up today to find the Tigers had joined the Red Sox and Yankees as baseball's superpowers I would have immediately assumed that society had crumbled and the world was being run by apes.

I'm sure some other teams are thinking, "Damn you all to hell!"

It really is a remarkable turnaround.

I spent some time today thinking about NL teams that are as well run and top-to-bottom sound as the Tigers, the Red Sox, the Indians, and (kinda) the Yankees. I mean, look at the Rockies. Best run differential in the NL, and... Yorvit Torrealba? Really?

to find the Tigers had joined the Red Sox and Yankees as baseball's superpowers

Maybe they should wait for the Tigers to actually win something before calling them superpowers? They dropped the '06 WS to possibly the weakest team to ever be world champs and missed the playoffs last year. Their bullpen is down without Zumaya and they just gave up their best pitching prospect for a guy who went 1-11 with an ERA over 6 over the last 4 months of the season hasn't has a winning season, given up lest than a hit an inning or had > 2:1 K/BB since '05 - in the NL. Even if they play Cabrera at 1B they are going to weaken and already weak defense which will be awful if they play him at 3B and Renteria at SS. Also remember Renteria was terrible in his first go round in the AL when he led MLB in errors so they could have Cabrera - most 3B errors in NL and range of a Clydesdale and Renteria on the left side of the infield with 3 lefthanded starters - not exactly the 1970 Orioles - Every AL playoff team finished ahead of them in pitching and every tean except LAA finished ahead of them in fielding and it's hard to see where they improved in either

Cabrera: What's wrong with me?
Loria: I think you're crazy.
Cabrera: Want a second opinion.
Loria: You're also lazy.
